Venita is now 75 and Vic is 90. -Jake Lamkins (2/12/08) I don't know if you were aware or not, but at the begining we wee The Rocky Mountain Air Line Agents Assocation in the early 50's. A sweeetheart Asssociation with FAL. I was the Master Chairman after Eddie Baker a Relief Agent stationed in FMN. After several tries to get a new agreement and after running out of dues monies while trying to negotiate, we were holding our negotiations in SLC ( I hoped that by bringing the FAL executives away from their home domicle we would have better luck). It was not to be. Elton Snoke, Manager of Stations was the FAL representative. After we broke off negotiations Elton came to me and asked what we wee going to do now? Strike? He laughed and I replied no, we'll have to go to a national union. He laughed again and said "...go ahead and try, better men that you have tried and failed". Long story short, I did. I and others worked hard after meeting with Vic Herbert. A long struggles ensued and we found ourselves in a ballot with the National Mediation Board. I really sweated the outcome. We prevailed and were certified with the NLMB and became "merged" with ALAA (The Airline Agents Association) which subsequently became ALEA. Vic Herbert of course was then and always was a true gentleman. I learned a great deal from him. I was the MEC chairman several times during my tenure with FAL. I don't know, if I had some of the old ALEA magazines I might be able to sort out some of your questions, however, I do not have even one of them. If they become available as reprints maybe I can purchase some of them and read thru them. I talked with Vic Herbert about five years ago, I do not know if he is still alive, do you? -Kerry Allen (8/2/08) I have been in contact with Ed Baker and he gave me some info about the Rocky Mountain ALAA. Chuck Schlener died Apr 2, 2002 at age 69. His memorial webpage is at the FL website. Elton Snoke died in Jan 1973 at age 51. He too has a memorial webpage at the FL website. Do you recall when you won the NMB election and got Vic Herbert's union? A websearch earlier this year found several references to Vic and Venita Herbert so I guess they are both alive and married now. Venita must be about 75 and Vic 90. -Jake Lamkins (8/4/08) I do not remember the date, it was 1960 or 1961. We met with the NLRB representative in Chicago, it was bitter cold and storms everywhere. The agent from FMN who represented the opposition to the merger with ALAA was unable to get into CHI due to weather, so Vic and I and the representative of the NLRB met in a government building and as I remember it was after hours because we waited for the FMN agent to get there (which he did not until a day or two later). Under the direction of the NLRB the ballots were counted and certified of the success of the election of ALAA. I sweated blood (almost) on the actual out come of the vote. I think we won the election by a mere 10 or so votes. I could just see my career with FAL going up in smoke if we lost the election. We were sucessful however. I believe in my heart of hearts that it was a good situation for the employees. ALAA, eventually ALEA in my opinion resulted in a benefit to the employees. I truly hope so. It created some personal problems but hopefully it was a benefit. Change is difficult no matter how well it turns out. There were some bitter feelings and understandably so. Isn't there someone that can contact maybe Venita Foster Herbert and find out if there wwere not some records (copies of the ALEA newsletter) from the beginnig that were saved and might be tucked away in someone's garage? Lots of interesting happenings could be recovered if they are . Maybe copies of ALEA contracts, etc. might be available as well? If someone could find Vic's phone number I would be happy to call and talk with Vic or Venita. I left ALEA under excellent circumstances and consider Vic Herbert not only a real gentleman but a good friend. Let me know? -Kerry Allen (8/5/08) I searched thru my files and found the attached article from the Spring 1957 ALAA magazine. My last contact for Vic was Victor Herbert 14730 Greenview Rd Orland Park, IL 60462-1992 (708) 403-5243 I think that's a good idea about checking on the records. I fear they are gone tho - they sold the HQs building and moved to a smaller office when they lost all their airline representation. When FL then RC were lost, they only had a few commuters left and they failed within a few years. ALEA never again represented any airlines and was closed down in 2003. -Jake Lamkins (8/5/08) I just had a nice conversation with Venita Herbert. Vic passed away in July 2008 after 3 mini strokes. The last one took him. She said that all the articles, pictures, airplane models etc. were dontate to various libraries. She did not know which ones. They were married 10 years and Venita worked for Vic for "45 years". He was just 3 weeks away from his 91st birthday. He was truly a gentlman and he was interested in the welfare of the Airline Employees. I personally learned alot from Vic. He was honest and his word was as good as gold. The Airline Industry would be in better shape if their had been a dozen or more Vic Herberts in the world. I would sure like to get a copy of Vic's obituary if you get it. -Kerry Allen (11/1/08) OBITUARY Herbert, Victor J. Victor J. Herbert, age 90, of Orland Park, formerly of Western Springs. Vic was an ALPA staff member in the late 1940s and was put in charge of developing subsidiary unions of non-pilot aviation crafts. Among them was one for stewardesses and station agents. The first evolved into present day AFA and the other became the ALEA which represented clerical, reservation, station and provisioning folks. Vic was the only president ALEA ever had until it was dissolved in 2003. I'll be working on an article about Vic for the newsletter. Email me any stories and/or pix you have. -Jake Lamkins (11/2/08) VICTOR J HERBERT Born 06 Aug 1917 Died 14 Jul 2008 Age 90 At 60462 (Orland Park, Cook, IL) SSN issued in Ohio -SSDI (11/2/08)
