A few days later I found I was assigned to be an air freight specialist. My duties mainly involved loading/unloading cargo planes. It was mostly hard physical labor. The NCOs and civilians had a lock on the non-physical jobs. But I got to see a lot of the Pacific: California, Hawaii, Johnston Island, Guam, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Wake Island, Midway and even Vietnam (from the air). It changed me from an introverted "99 lb. weakling" into a robust solid 185 lb extrovert. And it kept me from becoming a lifer. I was mustered out after 3 years, 5 months, 7 days, 9 hours and 55 minutes with an (barely) honorable discharge. And then I became an ex-Freight Ape.
