I was promised a job in the rocket program when I joined the Air Force in February 1961. My chemistry and laboratory technician background led the recruiter to suggest I get into a field working on rocket fuels. He said I would be working on improving fuelants and other areas of the rocket program. He said I would be a Fuel Specialist. I was sold...as only a naive 18 year old can be. When I got to basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas I discovered that a Fuel Specialist refueled airplanes. I should have kept my mouth shut but my overdeveloped sense of justice compelled me to make a squawk. The Sergeant counseling me on career selection said he would find something else for me. Thus I became an ex-rocket scientist.
